discussion
Discussion: Reviewed by Sempéré et al. (1996, Mammalian Species, 538) and by Lister et al. (1998) whose identification of caucasicus as correct name for large-sized subspecies north of Caucasus Mtns is provisional. Treatment of italicus as a valid subspecies follows Lorenzini et al. (2002).
