HABITATS AND DISTRIBUTION. — Originally, the species was collected in Missahohé (Kpalimé), forest area of Togo (Ahl 1931). This species is endemic to the Togo-Ghana forest zone according to SchiØtz (1999), Rödel & Agyei (2003) and Leaché et al. (2006). It is very abundant throughout the forest area of Togo. It occurs likewise in savannahs associated with forest areas near watercourses or pools. Males are usually sitting on grasses (Panicum sp.) at heights of 1.5 to 3 m above the ground, usually above water. This species was observed from the lower Missahohé Mountain (Yo, Agome) to Yégué in Adélé. The northernmost record in Togo is from Malfakassa valley (9 ° 10 ’ 45.54 ” N, 0 ° 58 ’ 16.69 ” E).

Hyperolius baumanni Ahl 1931

Hyperolius baumanni Ahl, 1931a: 34. Syntypes. ZMB 84956, coll. 26.VII.1894, ZMB 90925-90926, coll. 07.V.1894, all from “Misahöhe, Togo" [ Missahomé, Agou Prefecture, Plateau Region, Togo], all coll. Ernst Richard Reinhold Baumann. Present name. Hyperolius baumanni Ahl, 1931a. Remarks. Drawing in Ahl (1931b: 291, fig. 167). According to Ahl (1831a: 35) the original series consisted of four specimens, i.e. one collected on 26 July 1894 and three on 07 May 1893. However, the latter year given by Ahl is most probably a typographical error. According to Baumann’s preserved original field label, the date of collection was the "7. Mai 1894". Another paratype MCZ A-17627 from “Misahöhe, Togo", coll. Baumann on 07 May 1894, was sent in exchange from ZMB in 1932 (Barbour and Loveridge 1946: 127). The latter specimen was erroneously regarded as a holotype by Seniagbeto et al. (2007: 77). The natural scientist and cartographer Baumann joined the German Colonial Service in 1893. He worked at Klein Popo [ Aného, Lacs Prefecture, Maritime Region, Togo] and was later stationed at Misahöhe [Agou Prefecture, Plateau Region, Togo] where he was deputy station chief from 1894-95. §1

Description

Hyperolius baumanni is a medium-sized member of its genus, with males measuring 23–30 mm (0.91–1.18 in) and females about 31 mm (1.2 in) in snout–vent length. The dorsum is almost uniformly brown and bears a broad, light dorso-lateral stripe. The pupil is horizontal. Male advertisement call consists of a slow, coarse initial sound, followed by a long, accelerating series of clicks. Hyperolius baumanni is very similar to Hyperolius picturatus, and is possibly an eastern subspecies of the latter. However, the two have differences in morphology (larger gular flap in H. baumanni) and the advertisement call.

§2

Range & habitat

Hyperolius baumanni occurs in secondary forest, forest edge, and heavily degraded former forest (farm bush). Breeding is unknown but is assumed to involve attaching eggs to leaves above shallow, densely vegetated temporary ponds. The species is extremely abundant in its small range. No significant threats to this adaptable species are known. It occurs in the Kyabobo National Park in Ghana and in a number of smaller forest reserves. Given its presumed large population and adaptability, and despite its relatively small range, it is assessed as being of "Least Concern".

§3

In human culture

The specific name baumanni honours Ernst Baumann, a German zoologist (1863–1895) who worked at the German research station in Misahöhe, Togo—the type locality of this species.
